My projects

Nascente

“Nascente is the music that has been hanging around my mind for quite some time. I like to think about it as a heavenly space where the different pathways of our lives fade in together: this dimensions allows us to feel part of the same source. The sound that I had in mind for this album was occasionally mystic, dreamlike, percussive, chamber-music orientated and contemporary at the same time. The songs are original compositions mainly, but there are also personal arrangements of Brazilian authors such as Milton Nascimento, Egberto Gismonti and Ginga. Nascente is for me that place in our mind where we can peacefully wander and find ourselves authentic, no matter what happens outside of it: it’s a living refuge, a mirage for the bravest travelers.”

Songs Between two Lands

“Boundaries”, as the polish philosopher Bauman says, “divide the space , but they are not merely barriers. They are also interfaces among the places they separate. Such as that, they are subject to conflicting pressures”.
“Songs Between two Lands”is a wide collection of travel notes, taken along the way of a lasting collaboration between the vocalist Flavio Spampinato and guitarist Matteo di Leonardo, both Italians migrated to Belgium.
Born in Brussels, the quintet with the french drummer Pierre Hurty, the trumpet player Savoyart and the dutch bassist Ramon van Merkenstein and pianist Willem Suilen sounds rich in colors and shades. The songs – original compositions by Spampinato and Di Leonardo – are interestingly arranged, using a different combination of timbres and atmospheres.
“My personal goal within this project”, Flavio says,”was to create music for people, songs to bring them together. The songs are for me like bridges, soothing the distance between latitudes, nationalities and time frames”.

  • Matteo di Leonardo, guitar and effects
  • Willem Suilen, piano

Burnogualà Large vocal ensemble – Directed by Maria Pia de Vito

Founded and directed by Maria Pia de Vito, who defines the Burnogualà as a “research community”, the large Vocal Ensemble has a wide field of action:
from the late Renaissance polyphony (Orlando di Lasso, Willaert, Velardiniello) and contemporary authors such as Vince Mendoza, Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul and Diederik Wiessels, up to Brazilian authors, following a jazz-derived practice of arrangement and improvisation, including materials of different historical and geographical origin. A collective work of deepening and research of the sources, but with one foot in the contemporary, thanks to original compositions signed by some of the most refined contemporary composers. “Moresche e altre invenzioni”, published by Auditorium Parco della Musica Records, is their ground-breaking album on the Orlando di Lasso’s Moresche and Villanelle. Together with the 20 voices, accompanied by piano, doublebass, kora, barrel organ, balafon, bagpipe, there are many special guests as Ralph Towner and Rita Marcotulli.
